Product Builds

4 minutesread

Once your Product is set up in the Applause Platform, you will probably want to start testing its current – or future – version. While the concept of ‘builds’ is highly useful for software application development, it can also be borrowed for other digital products, including websites, IoT and hardware. Regardless, in the Applause Platform the ‘Build’ represents the state of your digital product being tested at a certain point in time.

Viewing Your Product Builds

To view your product builds:

1. Log in to the Applause Platform and navigate to Products.

2. In the Products page, locate the relevant product by sorting the table or using the search box above it.

3. Click on a product name.

4. New navigation options will be displayed in the navigation bar. Navigate to Builds.

The Builds page will be displayed. Product builds are set into cards, and you may sort those by the build’s name, ID, and create and last update dates.

For each build, basic information is presented, such as the build name and ID, changes it introduces, create and last update dates and date when it was last tested. In addition, a list of build sources is available – both files and URLs.

Creating a New Build

You are able to create a new build within the product context, or while creating (or editing) a test cycle for the product.

Product Context

In order to create the new build under the product context, follow the below steps:

1. While in the Builds page, click on the Add New Build button

Note: you may also find this action in the Actions drop down next to the build in the Builds page.

2. The New Build page is displayed.

3. Provide the following details:

  • Build Name: This will be based on the versioning format, as set for this product. Learn more about Versioning here.
  • Build Changes: Content changed in this release.
  • Sources: The files or URLs to access the build. These will be shared with the testers.

Test Cycle Context

In order to create the new build under the test cycle context, follow the below steps:

1. While in the Create (or Edit) Test Cycle page, click on the Build Being Tested drop down list, and select New Build.

2. Provide the following details:

  • Build Version: Make sure to follow the versioning format, as set for this product.
  • Build Changes: Content changed in this release.
  • Build Source: The files or URLs to access the build. These will be shared with the testers.

Note: On top of adding a new build when creating or editing a test cycle, there are two additional ways to add a new build under a testing context:

  • Continuous Test Cycle: For continuous test cycles, starting a new test run by definition will require a new build for the run. Learn more about continuous test cycles and how they differ from single test cycles here.
  • Bug Fix Verification: When initiating BFV as a standalone BFV cycle, as you request on an issue you will be asked to provide details of the build containing the fix. Learn more about Bug Fix Verification workflows here.

Editing an Existing Build

In case you need to edit the build’s details, follow these steps:

1. While in the Builds page, locate the card of the build you would like to edit.

2. Click the Edit Build button at the top right of the build card.

3. Update the build information, and click Save Build.

In case you need to add resources for the build, follow these steps:

1. While in the Builds page, locate the card of the build you would like to add resources to.

2. Click the Add File or URL Build button at the build card.

3. Select the source type – URL or Upload File, and provide the relevant information.

4. If needed, click Additional Sources to add more sources to the build.

5. Once completed, click Add Build Sources.

In case you need to remove a resource from the build, follow these steps:

1. While in the Builds page, locate the card of the build you would like to add resources to.

2. Locate the source you would like to remove. You may sort the source list by their name.

3. Click the X under Delete next to the source.

Testing Your Product Build

Granted, your product builds will be set in the Applause Platform in order to be tested by the testing community. In case the build was created under a test cycle context, the build is already set for testing under the test cycle it was created in. For builds created under the product context, a new test cycle will need to be created.

To test a build in a new test cycle:

1. While in the Builds page, locate the card of the build you would like to test. You may sort the builds based on their name, ID, create or update dates.

2. Click the Test in New Cycle button at the top right of the build card

3. The Add New Test Cycle page will be displayed.

4. Complete setting up the test cycle. Learn more about creating test cycles here.
